National Whale and Dolphin Watch is an annual citizen science event that, this year, is running from Saturday 23rd July to Sunday 31st July.
Research has shown that there is little awareness in the UK of the tremendous diversity of whales, dolphins and porpoises to be found around our shores. The aim of this event is to give a general “snapshot” of what is in UK coastal waters over a short period of time. As well as gaining valuable research data, we hope this will draw attention to the conservation of our marine environment.
How can you get involved? Anyone who wants to and who is in the UK during the event. So, whether you are planning a trip to the coast, travelling on a ferry in UK waters, sailing for fun, or just near the coast – you will have the perfect opportunity to take part. Your input will help give us a “snapshot” view of the status and distribution of the many cetaceans in our coastal waters. People with experience of "official watches" who can readily identify species just need some sightings forms or our SeaWatcher App, a pen and a pair of binoculars. "First timers" or people who need a bit of help identifying a whale, dolphin or porpoise can join our online training days or contact their local Regional Coordinator to find out details of organised watches and events in their area. More information about who your Regional Coordinator is can be found here - https://www.seawatchfoundation...
You can also contact our Recommended Boat Operators to book trips and collect data on board. More information about our RBOs can be found here - https://www.seawatchfoundation...
We'll also be running daily events from our Sea Watch Foundation base in New Quay, Wales. Pop down at the end of July to get involved! In the past we have done organised landwatches, coastal walks, rockpool safaris, beach cleans, BBQs, workshops, quizzes and competitions! We have lot's of prizes this year. Keep checking our social media and website to find out more about this year's events in New Quay.
Sea Watch is a national marine environmental charity working to improve the conservation of whales, dolphins and porpoises in the seas around Britain and Ireland. We aim to involve the public in scientific monitoring, raise awareness and understanding of marine mammals and the threats they face and educate, inform and advise for better environmental protection.
